Meta just bought six gigawatts of nuclear for the machines

The AI story stopped being about models the day a social-media company started signing for reactors. The limit on intelligence is turning out to be electricity, and the biggest players are buying the grid.

Follow the plumbing, not the coin.

On January 9, 2026, Meta announced agreements for up to 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear power, aimed squarely at its AI data centers. Six gigawatts is the output of several large power plants, enough to run millions of homes. A company that sells attention is now, in effect, an energy buyer at utility scale. That is the tell. When the constraint on a business becomes raw electricity, the business stops competing on software and starts competing on baseload power.

What Meta actually signed

The deals are a mix of keeping old reactors alive and building new ones. Existing nuclear plants get extended and uprated so they run longer and harder. Advanced-reactor developers get commitments to build entirely new capacity over the next decade. None of it is fast, and that is the point: these are ten-year bets on a physical resource, placed now, because the companies at the front of the AI race have concluded that the thing they will run out of is not chips or data. It is power.

Why it matters

Strip the AI race down to physics and it is a race for electrons. Models are cheap to copy; megawatts are not. Whoever locks up firm, always-on power controls the layer above it, because you cannot run a frontier model on a grid that cannot feed it. Meta buying six gigawatts of nuclear is the same move as a bank tokenizing its deposits or an asset manager filing to hold stablecoin reserves: the incumbent racing to own the scarce physical thing before the constraint bites.

How to use this edge

When you want to know who is serious about AI, do not read the model announcements. Read the power contracts, the interconnection queues, and the reactor deals. Compute is downstream of electricity, and electricity is downstream of who signed for baseload years in advance. The demos are noise. The energy deals are the signal.
